RCMP Adds EV to Fleet: What did they choose?

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Richmond and Langford, British Columbia, Canada, have introduced their first Tesla Model Y electric vehicle to their fleet. The vehicle has been specifically modified to meet police standards and will be used by frontline officers for duty calls. This is part of the West Shore RCMP's commitment to reduce their carbon footprint and comply with the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act.

Todd Preston, Superintendent in Charge of the West Shore RCMP, stated, “This is the first ever fully-electric RCMP police vehicle and we’re proud to be piloting it here in the West Shore detachment.” The location and mild winter weather make conditions ideal for testing the vehicle. The RCMP is also expected to test the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 electric vehicles later this year. The testing of EV performance at BC's West Coast division will help determine how and where EVs are best suited to expand the existing RCMP fleet.

The move to electric vehicles is expected to save the RCMP thousands of dollars in charging and maintenance costs, and also reduce their carbon footprint. In 2020, the average West Shore general-purpose police vehicle required approximately CAD$11,100 in fuel and maintenance costs. With the rising fuel prices and inflation, the cost of maintaining a gas-powered vehicle has increased even more. The RCMP expects that the cost of charging and maintaining an electric vehicle will be significantly lower than the cost of maintaining a gas-powered vehicle. Additionally, the use of electric vehicles has a positive impact on the environment.

By adding an electric vehicle to their fleet, the RCMP is setting an example for other law enforcement agencies to follow, demonstrating the benefits of electric vehicles in the field of public safety. It is likely that more police departments and other government agencies will follow suit and begin to adopt electric vehicles in their fleets, as the cost savings and environmental benefits become increasingly apparent.
